![]() ![]() Every controller, including some of my closest friends, co-workers and trainees, that went "Contract" only did it to make ends meet till the FAA, failed the Academy, aged out or retired. I left the USAF after 6 years as a E-5, GS-12 RAPCON Watch Supe with a PAR SEI and am now a Certified Professional Controller/Controller-In-Charge at a Level 11 Center. Dude I sat at that lvl 5 and printed myself free fuckin’ money.all day long. All depends on what you want.īut the comparison between the FAA and Contract? Not even close. If you don’t like ATC or hate yourself and like taking it from both ends.management is also a route. In the FAA you can sit at a low level with low stress or bid higher up to make a LOT more money.but also work a LOT harder. The pay was about the same once you checked, with WAY more leave and after a few years I was making 85-90K. The tower had 11 checked out controllers(over twice what we had at the contract tower), open 3 hours longer(but only had 1/5th the traffic volume), and it was common to be on break for half your shift(usually 2 hours at a time). When I got picked up by the FAA I started at a lvl 5 tower. ![]() You have 30 calendar days to check out completely(whole tower). No breaks other than a quick bathroom break.working ground was basically your break. There are even some contract towers that are twice as busy as where I was and they only get an extra 1-2 people. We averaged 700ish ops a day, had intersecting runways, GA’s, 2 fixed wing flight schools, 2 helo flight schools, bunch of private jets, Allegiant Airlines. It was always busy. ![]() We were open from 7am-9pm and the persons who opened/closed would work half their shift completely alone. Our entire staffing was 5 people, with usually only 3 people at work a day. Some are slow, some non-stop chaos, and some in the middle. Traffic level does depend on the facility. Let me say that I worked a shit ton harder and longer at that contract tower than anywhere else in my ATC career including a lvl 12. All of the big 3 contract tower companies Serco, Midwest, and RVA, have nearly the same pay, benefits and staffing levels. I did 6 years AF(with deployments), 1 year stateside contract tower(Serco), and so far 6 years FAA.
